How do I care for my cake?

Storage:

  • Room temperature: Wrap the cooled cake in plastic wrap or store it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. The classic pound cake's dense texture holds up well at room temperature.

  • Refrigeration: For longer storage (up to a week), store the cake in the refrigerator. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container to prevent drying and absorbing fridge odors. Let the cake come to room temperature before enjoying for the best flavor and texture.
  • Freezing: Pound cakes freeze beautifully! Wrap the cooled cake tightly in plastic wrap, then in aluminum foil, and freeze for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator or at room temperature for several hours before serving.

Bonus tip: If you have a loaf pan with a removable insert, you can slice the cake while it's still warm and then reassemble it in the pan with layers of fruit, jam, or whipped cream for an extra-special treat.

By following these simple tips, you can enjoy your pound cake for days to come!

How many does one cake serve?

The number of servings in a 10" pound cake can vary depending on several factors, such as:

  • Slice thickness: Thicker slices will yield fewer servings, while thinner slices will yield more.
  • Cake density: Denser cakes, like pound cakes, typically have fewer servings per pound than lighter cakes, like angel food cakes.
  • Serving size: What constitutes a "serving" is subjective and can vary depending on the occasion and the appetite of the guests.

However, here's a general estimate of how many servings you can expect from a 10" pound cake:

  • Standard serving size (1.5" x 2" x 1"): A 10" pound cake can be cut into approximately 25-30 slices of this size, yielding 25-30 servings.

Can I freeze the cake?

Freezing pound cake is a fantastic way to extend its shelf life and enjoy it later, whether you baked a whole cake and can't finish it all or simply want to have some delicious slices on hand for whenever the craving strikes. Here's how to do it safely and effectively:

Preparation:

  1. Ensure that your freshly baked pound cake is cooled completely to room temperature before freezing. This prevents condensation from forming inside the packaging, which can make the cake soggy.
  2. Slice or leave whole: Decide if you want to freeze the entire cake or individual slices. Slices are more convenient for thawing and enjoying in smaller portions, but freezing the whole cake is fine too.

Wrapping:

  1. Plastic wrap: Tightly wrap the cake (or individual slices) in two or three layers of plastic wrap. Make sure all surfaces are covered to prevent freezer burn.
  2. Aluminum foil: For extra protection, wrap the plastic-wrapped cake in a layer of aluminum foil. This further shields it from freezer burn and helps maintain its moisture.

Storing:

  1. Container or bag: Place the wrapped cake (or slices) in a freezer-safe container or bag. Squeeze out any excess air to minimize freezer burn.
  2. Labeling: Label the container or bag with the date you froze the cake. This will help you keep track of how long it's been in the freezer and ensure you enjoy it at its best.

Freezing tips:

  • Freezing time: Frozen pound cake will keep for up to 3 months. However, for the best texture and flavor, enjoy it within 2 months.
  • Thawing: Thaw frozen pound cake in the refrigerator overnight. This slow thawing process helps prevent the cake from becoming soggy. Alternatively, you can thaw individual slices at room temperature for about an hour.
  • Serving: Once thawed, enjoy your pound cake as is, or get creative! Toast slices for a warm and comforting treat, drizzle them with glaze or frosting, or use them as a base for parfaits or trifles.

Bonus tip: If you're planning to freeze slices, consider portioning them based on your intended use. For example, freeze individual slices for quick snacks, or freeze two slices together for a satisfying dessert.

By following these simple steps, you can freeze your pound cake with confidence and enjoy its deliciousness for weeks to come!
